An eSIM is a digital SIM you install by scanning a QR code. Buy it before your trip, turn it on when you land, and keep your home SIM for calls and texts. It needs a phone that supports eSIM and isn't locked to one operator.
A tourist SIM from Magti, Silknet or Cellfie usually gives more data for the money and includes a Georgian number. You need your passport to buy one, and a phone with a free SIM slot.
Operators have desks in the arrivals halls at Tbilisi and Kutaisi airports, and shops in every town centre. Airport prices can be higher than in town, so if you only need a few hours of data, an eSIM or the airport Wi-Fi bridges the gap.
Cities, main roads and the Black Sea coast are well covered by all three networks. In the high mountains coverage thins out quickly — check which network your plan uses before heading to Svaneti, Tusheti or Kazbegi, and download offline maps.
An eSIM is easiest — you install it before you fly and are online when you land. A local tourist SIM is usually cheaper per GB and gives you a Georgian number, but you buy it in person with your passport.
Magti is often reported to have the widest coverage in Svaneti, Kazbegi and Tusheti, with Silknet next. Most travel eSIMs run on one of the local networks, so check which one before a mountain trip.
Yes. Operators register every SIM card to an ID, so bring your passport to the shop or airport desk. An eSIM bought online doesn't need one.
Not for maps, messaging or most apps. A local number helps for calling guesthouses and drivers, and for services that send SMS codes to Georgian numbers.
