Getting around Georgia

Trains run west from Tbilisi to Kutaisi, Batumi, Kobuleti, Ureki, Poti and Zugdidi. They are cheap and comfortable but few: two or three a day, and summer trains to the coast sell out days ahead. Buses cover the same routes more often.

Mountain destinations — Kazbegi, Gudauri, Mestia, Tusheti — have no train. Marshrutkas (shared minibuses) leave from Didube and other stations, usually when full, with little room for luggage. A private transfer is the comfortable alternative and, for a group, often not much dearer per person.

Tips

  • Book trains early in summer, especially to Batumi.
  • Tusheti (Omalo) and Ushguli need a 4×4 for the final stretch; prices are on request.
  • In winter the road to Kazbegi can close at the Jvari Pass — keep a spare day.

Frequently asked questions

Is a private transfer more expensive than the bus?

For one person, yes. A transfer is priced for the whole car, so for a group of three or four it often costs little more per person than the bus — and it leaves when you want, stops on the way and takes your luggage.

Where do the train and bus prices come from?

From tre.ge, which sells Georgian Railway and intercity bus tickets. Marshrutka fares that are not sold online are added by hand after they have been checked.

Can I book everything here?

Each option links to where you can book it — PrivateTransfer.ge for transfers, tre.ge for trains and buses. Marshrutkas are paid in cash on board.
