What changed in 2026

From 1 January 2026 Georgia requires every foreign tourist to have health and accident insurance for the time they spend in the country. Before then insurance was recommended but not required. The rule is set by Government Resolution No. 602 of 26 December 2025, made under the Law of Georgia on Tourism.

The requirements are short:

  • a sum insured of at least 30,000 GEL for health and accidents;
  • valid from the day you enter until the day you leave, up to one year;
  • issued by a Georgian insurer or a foreign one licensed in its own country;
  • on paper or on screen, in Georgian or English.

Buying from a Georgian insurer or using your own

A Georgian visitor policy is the simplest way to be sure you comply: it is written for this rule, priced per day, and costs about the same as a coffee for each day of your stay. You buy it online, pay by card and get the policy by email.

Your own travel insurance counts as well, as long as it meets the minimum. Many annual or credit-card policies already do, but check three things: the medical limit is at least 30,000 GEL (about 10,000 EUR or USD), Georgia is inside the covered territory, and the dates cover your whole stay. Carry a copy in English.

What to look at besides the price

All the policies above meet the legal minimum, but they are not identical:

  • Age rules. Some insurers reimburse only part of the costs for travellers over 65, or charge more. Enter every traveller's age in the calculator to see the real price.
  • What's covered. Emergency hospital and outpatient care are standard; evacuation, repatriation, dental care and sports injuries vary. The table shows what each insurer publishes.
  • Assistance. You will deal with the insurer's 24/7 hotline if something goes wrong, so keep the number saved.

How the prices here work

Prices are taken from the insurers' own websites. Where an insurer publishes its tariff we check it every day; otherwise we check by hand and show the date. We don't sell insurance and take no commission: the "Buy" buttons go straight to each insurer. If the page has a sponsor it is labelled, and it never changes the order.

Frequently asked questions

Is travel insurance mandatory for Georgia?

Yes. Since 1 January 2026 every tourist entering Georgia must hold health and accident insurance with a sum insured of at least 30,000 GEL, valid for the whole stay. The rule comes from Government Resolution No. 602 of 26 December 2025.

Does my own travel insurance count?

Yes, if it is issued by an insurer licensed in its own country, covers health and accidents in Georgia for your whole stay, has a sum insured of at least 30,000 GEL (about 10,000 EUR), and you can show it in Georgian or English. Check the limit and the territory before you rely on it.

How much does Georgian visitor insurance cost?

Georgian insurers charge roughly 1.70–2.00 GEL per day per person for the 30,000 GEL minimum, so a two-week trip costs about 24–28 GEL. Some charge more, or reimburse less, for older travellers. The calculator above shows today's prices for your trip.

Will anyone check my insurance at the border?

The Patrol Police may ask for it at border crossing points. Keep the policy on your phone or printed out, in Georgian or English.

Do children need travel insurance?

The rule applies to every tourist, with no exception for age, so children need cover too. Most insurers price children like adults.

Can I buy insurance after I arrive?

The policy has to cover you from the day you enter, so buy it online before you travel. Several Georgian insurers sell policies online in a few minutes and email the policy straight away.

Who doesn't need it?

Holders of diplomatic or special visas or passports, accredited embassy, consular and international-organisation staff, people whose entry is governed by international agreements, and drivers in international road transport.
